Driving tired the same as driving drunk

"Don't get behind the wheel if you're drowsy. As most holiday travelers hit the road to return home this weekend, the law is on the lookout for speeders, drunk drivers and people not wearing seatbelts. But they'll also be watching closely for something many of us may be guilty of - driving tired.

Law enforcement officials said it causes accidents and deaths every day. But millions of people still get behind the wheel tired and lives are at risk because of it. Each year the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said more than 1,500 Americans die as a result of drowsy drivers. But, according to the National Sleep Foundation, two in 10 adult drivers admit to falling asleep on the roads."

Florida troopers to be out in force for speeding crackdown during Thanksgiving weekend

"The Florida Highway Patrol has announced a crackdown on speeders for the duration of the five-day Thanksgiving weekend. All FHP troopers assigned to office duties will be sent onto the roads starting on Wednesday to bolster the patrols for Operation Safe Ride, said Col. Chris Knight, FHP director. Those troopers, plus the ones normally assigned to road patrol, should translate into noticeable presence on the roads, he said. 'Based on our experience, we know that a black and tan patrol car tends to bring the best driving behavior out of people…that's why every available trooper and supervisor is being assigned to patrol duties during this time,' Knight said in a statement."

DUI Polk County

Polk DUI Less Jail Attorney Lawyer
Polk County Democrat: "New Program Offers Less Jail Time To Repeat DUI Drivers. Those arrested and sentenced for multiple counts of drunken driving will have an option that could lessen jail time.

Polk County commissioners approved the hiring of a counselor, probation officer and case manager for a new program that will offer treatment to drunken drivers. Paid for by a $90,700 grant from Florida Dept. of Transportation and user fees, the program, which is similar to drug court, will allow sentenced drivers to voluntarily join the program, and lessen their jail time.

The program is intended for repeat violators, and while commissioners were hopeful, Commission Chm. Jack Myers said the most important part of the program would be user support."
